Grand Rapids, MI -- The GRCC men’s tennis team began their winter semester with a nail biting win by beating MSU Club 5-4.  After getting out to a comfortable 4-2 lead from the singles portion of the match, the outcome became unclear as MSU’s #1 & #3 doubles teams recorded straight set wins to tie the overall match at 4-4 as well as scoring a first set victory over GRCC’s Casey Feenstra and Clayton Hodge at #2 doubles.

MSU's Ryan Bell and Drew Jackson also broke GRCC's #2 doubles serve to take an early 2nd set lead.  Casey Feenstra and Clayton Hodge made a couple adjustments in their return games and broke back in the 2nd set to even the second set score at 4-4 and broke for the second time in the set to pull out the second set out 6-4.

With the momentum on their side from winning the previous three games, Feenstra and Hodge never trailed in the super tie-breaker and won 10-7 to secure GRCC's 3rd win this year running their record up to 3-2.

Both Feenstra and Hodge also won their singles matches at #2 and #4 respectively, also recording wins were sophomore Matt Jackson at #3 singles beating MSU’s Ritwile Khare 6-3, 6-4 and freshman Andrew Amante from Rockford cruising at #5 singles 6-1, 6-0 against MSU’s Jon Sharp.

MSU swept the exhibition matches 3-0 but the Raiders’ Tim Hiskes looked sharp in their 6-4, 7-6 loss at #4 doubles.

Next up for the Raiders is a co-ed scrimmage against both Grand Valley’s varsity teams Saturday, February 4th at 2:30pm at Ramblewood Tennis & Health Club.  The scrimmage will help the Raiders prepare for the upcoming 2-day West Michigan Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (February 17-18) which includes all the top teams in the area including Aquinas, GVSU, Davenport, Calvin and Hope.
